Dubai, Sep 15 (PTI): Facing widespread backlash, the Indian cricket team has taken a firm stand by enforcing a ‘No Handshake’ policy during their Asia Cup clash against Pakistan, a decision that will continue in any upcoming meetings in the tournament.

The move, following the Pahalgam terror attack that killed 26 people in April, was seen as a mark of solidarity with the victims and their families. Skipper Suryakumar Yadav said, “Some things in life are bigger than sports. We dedicate this victory to our Armed Forces.” Head coach Gautam Gambhir echoed the sentiment, emphasizing that the decision was carefully deliberated and approved by senior BCCI officials.

The policy does not violate any rules, as handshakes are a goodwill gesture rather than a legal requirement in cricket. Historical precedent exists: Ukrainian player Elina Svitolina refused to shake hands with Belarus’s Victoria Azarenka at Wimbledon 2023 due to geopolitical tensions.

While criticism has been strong, India continues to play Pakistan at multi-nation events to maintain compliance with government policies, especially with cricket set to enter the 2028 Olympics and India planning major sporting events in 2030 and 2036.

For now, camaraderie on the field between India and Pakistan remains paused, though matches will continue.
