New Delhi, Sep 2 (PTI) Several women leaders of the BJP on Tuesday launched a fresh attack on the Opposition for the abuse directed at Prime Minister Narendra Modi’s mother during their recent ‘Voter Adhikar Yatra’ in Bihar, with Union minister Nirmala Sitharaman demanding an unconditional apology from Rahul Gandhi and Tejashwi Yadav.
Delhi Chief Minister Rekha Gupta alleged that two “princes”, Gandhi and Yadav, have shamed politics.
They fired salvos at the opposition leaders after Modi spoke on the issue for the first time in his virtual address to an event in Bihar.
“My late mother had nothing to do with politics, so what was her fault? Why was she abused?” he said.
“I may forgive them, but the people of Bihar will never pardon them for insulting my mother. People of the state must say that they will punish the leaders of these parties in the coming days,” he added.
Sitharaman condemned the incident as “extremely reprehensible, shameful and indecent”, calling it an insult to “every mother” in India.
“The Congress and RJD have dared to insult the ‘matrishakti’ (mothers) of India… What is even more worrying is that neither Rahul Gandhi nor Tejashwi Yadav nor any leader of the ‘INDI Alliance’ has apologised. No action has been taken against the organisers either,” the Union Finance Minister said.
Sitharaman demanded that Gandhi and Yadav extend an unconditional apology.
“The people of Bihar are feeling the same pain the prime minister is feeling today. The people of Bihar will never accept such misdeeds and will respond democratically,” she added.
Union minister and Apna Dal (Soneylal) chief Anupriya Patel condemned the incident as shameful and said, “If insulting a mother is considered appropriate in the culture of a political party, then there can be no more unfortunate and cheap example of politics than this.” Former Union minister Smriti Irani said women in Bihar will give a befitting reply to the Opposition for insulting the prime minister’s mother.
BJP leader and Union minister Raksha Khadse said there is no place for such vile comments in democratic tradition. People of Bihar will respond to such misdeeds democratically, she said.
BJP’s Radhika Khera claimed the Congress has shown that it lacks Indian values, alleging the party was also being run by foreigners.
She said all three members of the Gandhi family — Sonia Gandhi, Rahul and Priyanka Gandhi Vadra — have maintained silence over the matter. “Nothing can be worse. Their hate against Modi has risen so much that they are dragging his late mother into their abusive politics,” Khera added.
Gupta said while Modi has dedicated himself to serving every part of the country, the two “princes” have brought shame to political discourse. The abuse defined their low level of politics, she said.
“The Congress and the Gandhi family have been spreading hatred against Modi since the time he was the Gujarat chief minister. Now this undignified politics has reached the level of insulting his mother. This is an insult to every mother and every son, which the country will never forgive,” the Delhi chief minister said.
Delhi BJP’s women wing general secretary Priyal Bhardwaj said the language used against Modi’s late mother exposed the true character of the Rashtriya Janata Dal (RJD) and Congress alliance.
“When they fail to challenge the prime minister on the strength of his work, vision and commitment to the nation, they stoop to the lowest level of politics by abusing his family,” she said.
“Such conduct is not just indecent, it is a direct insult to the values of Indian culture and the respect every mother deserves,” Bhardwaj said, adding, “The INDIA bloc leadership must apologise to the nation.” A person from the Opposition’s dais in Darbhanga had hurled expletives at Modi, sparking a political row. He was arrested later.
Rajasthan Deputy Chief Minister Divya Kumari said insulting the “mothers, sisters and daughters” of the country has become the identity of the Congress-RJD and the “INDI Alliance”.
She said that under the leadership of Gandhi, the politics of the Congress has reached its “lowest level”.
Such indecent comments made from the soil of Bihar are not only an insult to the prime minister and his mother, but also to the great culture and tradition of the state, she added.
BJP MP Aparajita Sarangi, who represents Bhubaneswar in the Lok Sabha, said voters of Bihar will give a befitting reply to the opposition alliance. Only the Congress can practice such a low level of politics, she said.
BJP Rajya Sabha MP from Bihar Dharmshila Gupta said that neither Gandhi nor Yadav nor any leader of the “Indi Alliance” has apologised so far for the “shameful comment” made from Congress leader’s dais on August 28.
“This is indicative of their narrow mindset. The Congress and RJD have hurt the cultural heritage of Bihar,” she charged.
West Bengal BJP leader Locket Chatterjee said opposition leaders have fallen to targeting Modi’s mother after repeatedly “abusing” Modi. She said it was shocking that no opposition leader, including state Chief Minister Mamata Banerjee, criticised the abusive remarks. PTI KR PK PK KSS KSS
